PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS:
Vladislav Ya. Panchenko is an authority in laser information technologies, scientific
instrumentation technologies, non-linear optics and medical physics
SCIENTIFIC BIOGRAPHY:
Vladislav Ya. Panchenko graduated from the Faculty of physics of Lomonosov Moscow
State University (MSU) in 1971. He received his Candidate of Science and Doctor of
Sciences degrees from MSU. Since 1985 he has held the posts of Head of the Theory
department, Head of the Advanced Laser Technologies division, and Deputy Director
on science at the Scientific Research Center for Technological Lasers of RAS (NICTL AN).
Since 1992 to this day he has been Director of the Institute on Laser and Information
Technologies (NICTL AN before 1998). Since 2008 to this day he has been Chairman of the Board of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research
The significant contribution made by Vladislav Ya. Panchenko to science involves:
development of information optical technologies, systems and devices to produce
complex-topology 3D objects using the input data of various kind (tomographic and
photogravimetric data; measurement results; CAD models) transferred via Internet,
among them fabrication of prototypes of implants and phantoms of human organs on
the basis of pre-operative tomographic data;
elaboration of the theory, development of narrow-band (frequency-selective) Bragg
filters which employ single-mode polymer waveguides comprising submicron gratings,
for terabit fiber-optical networks;
investigation of turbulence in nonequilibrium gaseous media with the purpose of
development of adaptive optical systems to compensate for wave front aberrations in
high-power lasers and data transmission systems;
numerical modeling of directly solar pumped gaseous lasers (for telecommunications
as well) and of laser effects in the upper atmospheres of planets, which allowed the
interpretation of unique experimental data obtained at NASA;
elaboration of the theory of laser beam and ultrashort pulse diffraction at
spatially modulated surface, and development of innovative diffraction elements to
control powerful laser radiation parameters;
development of up-to-date devices of adaptive optics and diagnostic systems to
pursue the research in the areas of superhigh optical fields and basic medicine
Vladislav Ya. Panchenko inspired the development of laser technologies and the
production of systems and complexes for diverse applications, directly participating
in all the activities. Among them are
domestic systems for laser treatment of materials, including those for special
purpose. Jointly with the innovative small-scale enterprises ILIT RAS manufactured more
than 130 systems for precision cutting of metals. These systems are operated in Russia and
abroad;
information laser systems and technologies for rapid prototyping (laser
stereolithography, selective laser sintering of powders). The facilities and technologies
have a wide application in aerospace industry, radio electronics, and medicine. The works
have been performed on building aero- and hydrodynamic models to be used in the design of
promising apparatus for civil and military purpose (together with Bauman MSTU and
FSUE TsAGI). A variety of 3D models and complex-topology assemblies have been produced
for use in optical, radio and electronic devices. More than 1500 operations of
cranio-maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery, spinal surgery, and oncology have been
performed at 27 clinics of the Russian Federation (Gertsen Moscow Research Oncology
Institute, Burdenko Neurosurgery Research Institute, and others), employing the biomodels
fabricated by stereolithography technique on the basis of the tomography data of
pre-operative examination of patients transferred via Internet;
new-generation intellectual laser surgical systems "Lancet M" and "Perfocor".
The "Lancet M" system permits the surgeon to define the type of removed biotissue
immediately in operation, which opens up new ways of performing low-traumatic and
organ-secure operations, first of all in oncology. The systems have successfully passed
the clinical trials, and are now used in the clinical practice at Gertsen Moscow Research
Oncology Institute and State Research Center "Laser Medicine". The "Perfocor" systems
have performed more than 500 TMLR (transmyocardial laser revascularization) operations
on the beating heart, which replace or supplement coronary artery bypass grafting
(Bakoulev Research Cardio-Vascular Surgery Center);
an adaptive optical system for ophthalmology that enables recording the image
of human eye retina with the spatial resolution up to 1 m m (jointly with Lomonosov
Moscow State University). The system has been successfully tested
